Fun Things to Do This Weekend Near Locust Grove, VA
If you’re looking for things to do this weekend within an hour of Locust Grove, VA, you don’t have to go far. One of the things I enjoy about living and working in this part of Virginia is how quickly the scenery—and the weekend options—can change.
You can start Saturday morning at a farmers market, spend the afternoon around Lake Anna, wander through historic downtown Fredericksburg, or stay closer to home in Locust Grove. And with summer winding down, this is a good weekend to get outside before the calendar starts filling up with fall activities.
I pulled together several options for Saturday, August 22, and Sunday, August 23, 2026, that are roughly within an hour of Locust Grove, depending on where you’re starting and traffic.
Saturday Morning: Visit a Farmers Market
If your ideal Saturday starts slowly—with coffee, fresh produce and a little time outside—there are a couple of good choices nearby.
The Spotsylvania Farmers Market Saturday Market at the Commuter Lot at Route 3/Gordon Road is scheduled for August 22 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
You can also head toward Culpeper for the Culpeper Downtown Farmers Market, which runs Saturday morning from 7:30 a.m. to noon. Visit Culpeper also lists a downtown history walking tour at 11 a.m. that day.
This is one of the things I like about the communities around Locust Grove. You aren't limited to one downtown or one town center. Within a reasonable drive, you have Orange, Culpeper, Fredericksburg and Lake Anna, each with its own personality.
Take a Trip to Lake Anna for Crab Fest
If you're looking for something a little more festive, Lake Anna Crab Fest is happening Saturday, August 22.
The event is scheduled at Lake Anna Winery in Spotsylvania County from 2 to 6 p.m. and includes vendors, crabs and activities for children, including a bounce house. Spotsylvania County's official calendar lists the event from 3 to 7 p.m., so I'd recommend checking with the event organizer before heading out for the most current schedule.
Lake Anna is one of those places that makes sense even when there isn't a major event happening. You can make an entire afternoon out of the trip—grab something to eat, spend some time near the water and enjoy the slower pace.
For people considering a move to the Lake Anna area, this is also a good way to experience the community rather than simply driving through it while looking at houses.
Spend the Day in Downtown Fredericksburg
Fredericksburg is another easy weekend destination from Locust Grove, and Saturday has several options.
Art in the Park is scheduled for Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hurkamp Park and is listed as free.
If you're interested in local history, the Central Rappahannock Regional Library also has a free program on the basics of using genetics for genealogy from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. If you're a dog lover, Old Dominion Humane Society has its weekly Saturday stroll with rescue dogs at 7:45 a.m.
Downtown Fredericksburg is particularly nice for a day when you don't want a tightly scheduled itinerary. Walk around, browse the shops, grab lunch and see where the afternoon takes you.
Something Different: Dog Krazy's 20th Anniversary
If you're a dog person, there's another Fredericksburg option worth knowing about.
Dog Krazy's 20th Anniversary celebration takes place Saturday, August 22, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at its William Street location. The celebration includes 20% off the store, along with raffles, giveaways and other activities.
It's not the kind of event that will appeal to everyone, obviously. But that's part of what makes a local weekend list useful. Sometimes you're not looking for a major festival. You're just looking for something different to do for an hour or two.
Looking for a Saturday Night Out?
Fredericksburg has a few evening options as well.
The Fred SPCA Fur Ball: A Fairy Tail Gala takes place Saturday evening at the Fredericksburg Convention Center. The event supports the Fredericksburg SPCA and is scheduled for 5 to 10 p.m.
There are also performances of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice scheduled in downtown Fredericksburg Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon.
For those who'd rather stay outside, you could simply make dinner in Fredericksburg and take a walk through the historic downtown afterward. Sometimes that's all you need.
Sunday: Keep It Simple
Sunday doesn't have to be packed.
The (new for 2026) Spotsylvania Farmers Market Sunday Market at Spotsylvania High School is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on August 23.
Old Dominion Humane Society also hosts its weekly Sunday hike with rescue dogs from 7:45 to 10:30 a.m and if you want a quieter Sunday, you could head to Culpeper for the 11 a.m. downtown history walking tour. Visit Culpeper also lists a barrel tasting from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday.
One of the advantages of living around Locust Grove is that you can have a very active weekend without feeling like you're constantly in the middle of a city.
What This Says About Living in the Locust Grove Area
I spend a lot of time talking with buyers about what they actually want from a home. The conversation usually goes beyond bedrooms, bathrooms and square footage.
People want to know:
- What is there to do?
- How far will I have to drive?
- What's the community like?
- Can I get outside?
- Where will I take the kids?
- What about restaurants, shopping and weekend activities?
Those questions matter.
Locust Grove gives you access to several very different communities without requiring a long road trip. You're close to Lake of the Woods and Lake Anna for outdoor recreation, Fredericksburg for shopping, dining, history and entertainment, Culpeper for its small-town downtown and Orange County for its rural character, wineries and historic attractions.
That variety is one of the things that makes this part of Virginia appealing to people who want some breathing room without being completely removed from everything.
If you're thinking about buying a home, I'd encourage you to explore the area before you make an offer. Drive the roads. Visit a farmers market. Have lunch somewhere local. Check out the parks. See what a Saturday actually feels like. A house can look great online and living in the surrounding community is what you'll experience every week.
Events and schedules can change, so I'd recommend checking with the organizer before leaving, particularly for admission prices, weather-related changes and exact event times.
If you're considering buying a home in Locust Grove, Lake of the Woods, Orange County, Spotsylvania County, Rhoadesville, Unionville, Lake Anna, Culpeper or the Fredericksburg area, I'd be happy to talk with you about what living in each community is actually like. Whether you're trying to figure out where you want to live, wondering what your current home might be worth, or simply trying to decide whether buying or selling makes sense right now, feel free to reach out. Sometimes a conversation is the best place to start.
